Why We Are All Obsessed With Exciting Emails


In all seriousness, the term ‘exciting emails’ is one that I could do without seeing and scrolling past on a daily basis.

Not because I’m not happy for those on the receiving end – get yours girlfriend – but because of what the phrase really means.

Why I Have A Problem With Exciting Emails

Ah now this is thorny, and possibly divisive but I do have a lot of issues with influencers who take to social media just to announce that they have received an ‘exciting email’. My issues with this term are: it’s braggy, it’s vague and I GET TOO JEALOUS.

Yep, there I said it.

Of COURSE I am happy for my fellow bloggers/content creators/influencers or whatever wanky term we’re rocking today when they are given amazing opportunities.

99.9% of bloggers work INCREDIBLY hard on their content, social, photographs and brand and each and every time one of them is rewarded with a press trip, an insane gift or an out of this world collaboration, 99.9% of me punches the air with glee.

That other 0.1% though, well that gets annoyed with the exciting email crap.

First of all – the braggy element. I’m all for us celebrating ourselves and each other BUT I know there are many bloggers out there who feel shit about themselves when someone gets something great. Yes, of course they shouldn’t but they (we) do.

Then it’s the vagueness of them. I get that some creators are bound by non-disclosures when they want to reveal their latest campaign, but does Poundland really care if Becky announces she’s doing a post with them?

Rather than sound the ‘exciting email’ klaxon all over social media, just come out and be like, ‘ZOMG GUYZ Dominos is sending me 100 free pizzas AND paying me to feature them on my channel!’

Sure, some of us will still be jelly but mostly we’ll be all like, ‘yasss you get that Pepperoni Passion.’

Finally, the shit thing to admit is that yep, the ‘exciting email’ phrase does make me feel shit sometimes. Sure when I’m on top of my blog jobs, and have my own exciting collaborations bubbling away, it’s water off a duck’s back but after being rejected by Poundland and having a brand not pay you whilst Becky and Sheila go to Disneyland for the 3835th time with Topshop, seeing people get those ‘exciting emails’ cuts deep.

I didn’t get rejected by Poundland FYI.

So there, you’re probably sat there like, ‘Bah Humbug Vix – way to shit on everyone’s parade!’ But please bear with me, it comes from a nice place…

Exciting Emails Are An Escape

I personally think the allure of getting exciting emails landing in your inbox is that you convince yourself that it’s going to be the golden ticket out of whatever situation you’re in.

Whether it’s a brand collaboration that you feel will elevate your profile, a press trip that will take you away or someone bumming your blog – the reason we crave those emails is that we want them to improve something, somehow.

Is that a bad thing? No, of course, as bloggers, we all have aspirations to be better and get better but does waiting around for an exciting email make us miss what we have already?

When we see Tammy Ten Emails hinting that ASOS have slid into her DMs it might make us overlook the brand collaborations in our inboxes – purely because ASOS is the holy grail (for some).

From personal experience, I know that occasionally, when I’m trying to switch off to sleep but my mind is racing with, ugh CBA with work tomorrow that I start taking for granted the great things by blog IS doing all because the elusive exciting email hasn’t landed that day.

The Ones That Don’t Land

And my final (miserly) issue with our obsession with exciting emails is that occasionally one will appear in your inbox that appears to be sent from the Gods, only for nothing to ever transpire from it.

As creators, we (hopefully) know exactly what it is we want to achieve with our platforms – whether it be a book deal, TV, collaborations, modelling or just (the best bit) being engaged in an exciting and supportive creative community. So with these goals in mind, we all have the dream email that we pray lands in our Gmail.

So when one appears that looks like it could be our Golden Ticket only for you to never get a reply or to accidentally delete it (YEP, ME) it can leave us even more deflated than if we’d never received an email in the first place.

So What Do You Suggest Vix, You MASSIVE Spoilsport?

Well, first of all, PLEASE don’t stop celebrating your own successes. You are ALL doing the most amazing job that is harder work than anyone outside of this industry could ever contemplate.

But PLEASE bear in mind the following:

Who benefits from me bragging about an exciting email I’ve received? Does the brand? Does my audience? Or is it just to make myself feel better?

Why am I excited? Is it because it’s the opportunity of a lifetime or is it just because I feel crap and need a lift?

Can I be more specific so as to appear in Vix’s timeline after she’s muted the phrase ‘exciting email’? SURE because unless I’ve been specifically told that I can’t say anything then it would be something AMAZING to share with my followers.

And if the phrase ‘exciting email’ REALLY MUST BE USED then fucking own it and don’t listen to a single thing I say.

(this is written COMPLETELY with my tongue in cheek and NO ONE is allowed to get butt hurt, k? Plus Next sent me those goodies above (aff linked) and they are gorgeous so focus on those mmmk?)

    Haha, absolutely loved this Vix! Your tongue in cheek tone is right up my street. Personally, the only exciting email I’ll ever be inclined to shout about on social media is the one where I’m invited on a dog safari… never stop dreaming, kids. Great post my darling! X

    I definitely think that if I ever tweet about a collab before it’s been confirmed that I’m gonna get bad karma and it’s all gonna fall through but seeing exciting email tweets don’t really make me angry or jealous because you never know what that email could be – the person could be super excited about a Nigerian prince wanting them send to money! ? When I get jealous is when I see what the collab actually is – Dominos want to send them 100 pizzas but not me? Ouch! ?

    I hate the Vagueness of it all, to me its the blogging equivalent of saying something vague on facebook then being all “DM me” in the comments. HELL NO. If you don’t want to be social about it don’t put it on socials. JEEEEEZ. Or at least give hints, or let us guess! 🙁

    I personally don’t bother when I read that because I try to focus on the ones I receive and I celebrate those by telling my family, I rarely share it on the internet. I am still a small blogger so when I receive an e-mail for a collaboration I get all excited cause I feel that my work is being recognized, even if it comes from a brand I never heard off.
    But I totally get what you mean and in the days where I am low in motivation, productivity and inspiration, reading those things just makes it even worse!

    I came across your blog after one of your tweets about a Toffee Crisp being used as a condom wrapper in Manchester and seriously, every time I read a post I fall in love with you a bit more! Not going to lie, I’m guilty of blaring the exciting email klaxon but I so get feeling shit when other people do so it’s something I definitely need to stop doing now! But it was the first exciting email I’d received so I guess that’s okay, right?! Loved this post either way haha

    I also do not like the term exciting email, but mainly because I’m jealous, as I seem to have a severe lack of exciting emails in my inbox 🙂

    I totally get you loves; Now that I’m in full-time work and can’t dedicate more time to my blog, I get jealous when I see people with these exciting emails! The ones that don’t land are the worst! About 2 years ago a very well-known high street brand (who I won’t name!) got in touch wanting to do some massive things with me including events/promo videos/face of their petite range etc and then they just totally ignored me. FABULOUSO NO?
